How to tell the story.

The story of Kiltartan is of a business existing to support whatever that story is and however it may develop. As the founder, Michael uses his expertise as a commercial lawyer and adviser to sit alongside clients – whether as in-house counsel, board director, or lawyer for a project.

A Brief History

Michael grew up in the north of Ireland, eventually leaving to start his legal career in England. An in-house lawyer with GKN plc, he was a part of a cross-border M&A and Commercial team, the third leg beside Finance and Business helping negotiate contracts in the Far East, the Americas and Europe.

With the influx of US law firms into the UK, Michael joined the then largest US domestic M&A law firm (Dorsey) to help grow its nascent London office, and made partner in the new Venture Capital division. He was recognised by Chambers Guide as a leading lawyer in his field, and moved to McDermott, Will & Emery before starting his own practice.

In that time he acted for Intel Capital, Carlyle Europe Partners, Motorola Ventures, Cisco, and Pearson Education – helping in the venture investment in young British technology companies, and advising on the acquisition of the UK examining board, Edexcel.

His fondest memory, however, remains the brief period when he acted for the Jim Henson Corporation in the UK, prior to its acquisition by Disney – it takes some going to beat meeting Kermit on the Henson film lot in LA.

Kiltartan has developed into a below the radar commercial practice – emphasising the role of the in-house counsel, both as lawyer and commercial adviser.
